Home Solar Installation in Bangalore: How the Process Actually Works

Introduction
Home solar installation in Bangalore takes far less time than most homeowners expect. The panels themselves can usually be installed in under a day; the real wait often comes from government approvals and paperwork. This guide walks you through exactly what happens, from your first enquiry to the day your system starts generating electricity, with the actual maths behind each step.
Search for home solar installation in Bangalore and you’ll find plenty of pages covering more or less the same five or six steps. Most are written with apartment complexes in mind, rather than individual homeowners installing panels on their own roofs. And very few explain how long each step actually takes.
This guide breaks down the process day by day and includes information from two independent government sources that most other guides leave out.
It’s worth naming the worry before getting into the process: spending upwards of a lakh or two on your roof is not a small decision, and most homeowners going into it are quietly wondering whether they’ll be sold a bigger system than they need, whether the installer will actually show up for warranty issues later, whether drilling into the roof causes problems down the line, and whether the subsidy will actually arrive or get stuck in paperwork. Those are reasonable questions. The rest of this guide answers them with specifics.
“Most homeowners assume solar installation takes weeks. In reality, the panels are usually up before lunch. What actually takes time is the paperwork — and even that has a legal deadline BESCOM has to meet, or pay a penalty for missing it.”
Who This Guide Is For
This is for people who own their roof outright: independent houses, villas, and row houses, whether that’s a Whitefield villa, an independent home in Electronic City, a JP Nagar terrace, a house in HSR Layout, or a villa along Sarjapur Road. It also covers homeowners in Yelahanka, Kanakapura Road and Hennur. It is not written for apartment owners or commercial buildings, where the process runs through a body corporate or a power purchase agreement instead.
What Does Home Solar Installation Actually Involve?
Home solar installation covers everything between the first site visit and the day your electricity provider switches the system on. In Bangalore, that provider is BESCOM, short for Bangalore Electricity Supply Company. The work itself includes the solar panels, an inverter (the box that turns the panels’ output into electricity your home can actually use), the mounting structure, the cabling, and a bidirectional meter that measures power flowing both to and from your home.
It does not include ongoing cleaning or servicing, usually a separate, optional add-on. Two separate approvals run underneath the process itself: the national PM Surya Ghar Yojana portal, which processes your subsidy, and BESCOM’s own solar portal, called SRTPV, which processes the actual connection to the grid.
The 5 Steps of Home Solar Installation in Bangalore
Here is what actually happens, stage by stage, with the real number of days each one takes.
Step 1 – Site Survey (2 to 4 Days)
An engineer visits your roof, measures how much of it gets clear sunlight, checks whether the structure can safely bear the weight of the panels (roughly 15 to 20 kg per square metre), and confirms your sanctioned load, the maximum amount of power your electricity connection is registered to draw, printed on your bill. As a rough guide, you need about 10 square metres of clear roof for every kilowatt (kW) of system size.
What Our Engineers Actually Check
- Roof structure and type, whether RCC, metal sheet, or tile, and its load-bearing capacity
- Shading sources, including trees, water tanks, parapets, and neighbouring buildings
- Your sanctioned load and actual energy requirements
- Optimal panel placement and cable routing across the roof
This is Atria’s own published site-survey checklist, as outlined in its FAQ and solar installation guidance. It is also what you should expect from any installer during a proper survey. If a vendor skips these checks and goes straight to a quote, that is worth noticing.
You can typically book a site survey online, over the phone, or through an app. Atria, for example, offers all three options through its website, call centre or AI-assisted call service, and the Namma Atria app. According to Atria’s customer journey video, the survey is scheduled within 2 to 4 business days of the call. Once you’re happy with the proposal, most installers ask for a booking payment to confirm the order. Atria’s booking payment is ₹5,000, as stated in the Customer Journey and Site Survey videos.
Step 2 – Documents and KYC (1 to 2 Days)
KYC, short for “know your customer”, is just the standard identity paperwork every service in India asks for: an Aadhaar card, a PAN card, your latest electricity bill, a cancelled cheque, and roof-ownership proof if the property isn’t in your name. Done through an app, this usually takes a day or two.
Step 3 – Government and BESCOM Approval (7 to 21 Days)
The approval stage is usually the longest part of a rooftop solar installation in Bangalore. However, once your work-completion report is uploaded, BESCOM’s published procedure gives it just 5 working days to inspect and commission a domestic rooftop solar system up to 10 kW. If that deadline is missed, the responsible officer is liable for a ₹1,000-per-day penalty payable to the consumer. Two applications run alongside each other: one through the PM Surya Ghar portal for the central government subsidy, and another through the BESCOM SRTPV portal for the grid connection.
How long does BESCOM legally have to approve rooftop solar?
For domestic rooftop solar systems between 1 kW and 10 kW, BESCOM’s published procedure states that the inspection and commissioning should be completed within 5 working days after the work-completion report is uploaded. If BESCOM exceeds this period, the responsible officer is liable for a ₹1,000-per-day penalty until the plant is commissioned. You can read the full BESCOM procedure and timeline for grid-connected SRTPV plants for the exact requirements and timelines. The 7-to-21-day timeframe homeowners typically experience therefore does not mean BESCOM takes three weeks to commission the system. Much of the waiting can come before the 5-working-day clock starts, including paperwork, scheduling the inspection and completing the required notice period. Atria’s rooftop solar installation FAQ also reflects this broader timeline. Many homeowners prefer an installer that manages this stage through to commissioning rather than leaving them to navigate BESCOM procedures themselves. Atria, for example, assigns a dedicated relationship manager to coordinate the process and confirm the installation date, as described in its Site Survey customer journey.
Step 4 – Physical Installation (Under a Day)
Once the paperwork clears, the panels, inverter, mounting structure and cabling can typically be installed in a single visit lasting about 5 hours, rather than taking several days.
Step 5 – Commissioning (Within 48 hours)
BESCOM fits the bidirectional meter mentioned earlier, which tracks the electricity you draw from the grid against what your solar system sends back. Based on Atria’s own installation experience, systems are typically switched on within 48 hours of the meter being fitted. This is Atria’s observed turnaround and not a guarantee of BESCOM’s metering timeline. BESCOM’s published procedure provides a 5-working-day window for inspection and commissioning once the required work-completion report has been uploaded.
So How Long Does Home Solar Installation Actually Take?
The overall timeline depends on how quickly each stage is completed. Here’s the process at a glance:
- Site survey: 2–4 days
- KYC and documentation: 1–2 days
- BESCOM/DISCOM approval: 7–21 days
- Physical installation: About 5 hours
- Commissioning: Within 48 hours
How long does home solar installation take in Bangalore?
Add up the fastest version of every stage and you get roughly 10 to 12 days. Add up the slowest and it is closer to 29. That is why Atria quotes “2 to 4 weeks” instead of one fixed number. The one part you cannot speed up yourself is Step 3 — not because BESCOM is slow once your file lands on an officer’s desk, but because reaching that point takes real-world coordination.
The Bottom Line
Getting home solar installed in Bangalore takes roughly 2 to 4 weeks from booking to switch-on, and almost all of that time is paperwork, not panels: physical installation is done in under a day, and BESCOM itself is bound to a 5-working-day inspection window once your work-completion report is in. The government subsidy is worth up to ₹78,000 in fixed rupee amounts, bringing the effective cost of a typical residential system down to somewhere between ₹1.20 lakh and ₹2.50 lakh. If you’ve read this far, you probably already know roughly how the process works. The only question left is whether your own roof is suitable, and what size system actually fits your bill. A site assessment answers both in one visit.
Rooftop solar isn’t a complicated project. It’s a paperwork project with an installation attached.
